Passion Flower Herbs

Passion Flowers (Passiflora incarnata) Acts like a sedative. Gives a very relaxed high and is a mild hallucinogen. This is the only passion flower known to contain harmine and harmaline as well as the usually found harman. Can be smoked or made as a tasty tea or strong decoction.

For many years, plant researchers believed that a group of harmane alkaloids were the active constituents in passion flowers. Recent studies, however, have pointed to the flavonoids in passion flower as the primary constituents responsible for its relaxing and anti-anxiety effects.

The European literature involving passion flower recommends it primarily for anti-anxiety treatment; in this context, it is often combined with valerian, lemon balm, and other herbs with sedative properties.
The alkaloids in Passionflower have stimulant qualities, but also help relax spasms in the smooth muscles, dilate coronary arteries, and lower blood pressure. Passionflower is also used to treat neuralgia, shingles, sciatica, Parkinson’s disease, muscle pain, twitching and spasm, anxiety, agitation, stress and any other physical problems due to stress.
