A rise in the number of ticks this year has experts on infectious disease focused on the best way to treat Lyme disease.
Symptoms of Lyme disease include the appearance of red circular lesions or a rash known as erythema migrans (EM) or “bulls-eye rash”, backache, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, such as chills, fever, nausea, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, stiff neck, arthritis, vomiting, facial paralysis, and joint pain and swelling.
Because tick bites are usually painless, the symptoms are varied and the incubation period can last weeks or months, Lyme disease can go undiagnosed for an extended length of time.

Lyme disease is a long-term illness caused by a bacterial infection spread by deer ticks and black-legged ticks. More than 23,000 Americans contract Lyme disease each year, most of whom catch the disease in the northeastern and north-central United States. The ticks obtain the bacteria by feeding on infected mice or deep, then pass it on to humans and other animals through the feeding process.
A person is more likely to develop Lyme disease if a tick is on the body for 36- to 48-hours or more. Lyme disease tends to occur more frequently in late spring and summer when ticks are most active and humans are outdoors more often. Early detection and treatment of Lyme disease is important for recovery. Lyme disease is treatable and usually curable if detected in its early stages. If not treated early, serious, long-term affects can occur.
Possible Causes of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorferi, which is usually contracted from various ticks that have obtained the bacteria from deer or mice, which act as carriers for the disease. When an infected tick bites a human, it waits several hours before feeding on its host. Once the feeding process begins, it continues for three to four days, all the while, sharing its bacteria with the host.
According to Dr. James Howenstine, MD. in an article dated April 17, 2005: “It is now realized that Lyme Disease can mimic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Bell’s Palsy, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, neuritis, psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, chronic fatigue, heart failure, angina, irregular heart rhythms, fibromyalgia, dermatitis, autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma and lupus, eye inflammatory reactions, sudden deafness, SIDS, ADD and hyperactivity, chronic pain and many other conditions.”
